The Southern Tagalog Consortium for Industry and Energy Research and Development (STCIERD), together with DOST-CALABARZON, conducted its “Webinar on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science: Pillars of the Future” last 29 July 2022 via Zoom for the consortium’s member agencies. The said webinar aims to orient and introduce the relevance of AI and Data Science in research and how they can affect various industries and disciplines.

STCIERD Consortium Chair Dr. Tirso Ronquillo, in his opening remarks said, “Our research now really necessitates artificial intelligence and data science. We are all taught how data can be useful in evidence-based decision making.”

He encouraged everyone to pay attention to the introductory discussion to gain more insights on the applications of the topic. “I hope that our webinar speaker will be able to give us more enlightenment, and will give us more insights on how to engage properly on data science and artificial intelligence.”

Engr. Elmer Joaquin, Educator and Data Scientist from the Adventist University of the Philippines, led the discussion which included the subtopics about the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Data-centric organizations, and AI and Data Science for Nation-building. Towards the end of the discussion, he expressed his hopes on finding more local and competent talents in the field.

“At the end of the day, somebody must help you with the big data that you are holding. And it will be nice if they will be coming from our own institutions,” he remarked. Meanwhile, Dr. Lorcelie Taclan, Consortium Director, delivered the closing remarks.

Dr. Taclan thanked Engr. Joaquin as well as the member agencies and other invited institutions beyond the region, for attending the event. She said, “I believe all of us now have a greater knowledge about the subject. Ngayon ko lang din po medyo naiintindihan ang topic na ’to.”
