DOST CALABARZON, through the Provincial S&T Center of Cavite, provided Virgie Lopez, financial assistance for the acquisition of packaging and sealing equipment to improve processing and handling of chips (deep fried snack) from Asian green mussels (Mytilus edulis), locally known as tahong. Lopez, owner of Ocean Fresh Tahong Chips, located in Sineguelasan, Bacoor, Cavite received PhP0.35M in assistance through the Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), a banner project of the science and technology department.

Now farmers and processors can look forward to increased demand and prices for this natural fiber. Abaca (Musa textilis Nee), also known as the Manila Hemp, was found out in a study to possess extremely high tensile strength, high enough to replace plastic composite parts of cars!

The Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) and several member-agencies of the Southeast Asia Cooperation (SEACOOP) Consortium recently kicked off the SEALING (Supporting to Policy Dialogues and Strengthening with Southeast Asia) Project in Jakarta, Indonesia. The two-year long project forges a stronger alliance between ASEAN countries and the European Union (EU). It adds to the results of the project achieved early on from 2007 to 2009 and opens up opportunities for the further development of so-called Information Society Policy Dialogues.

The Philippine Council for Advanced Science and Technology Research and Development (PCASTRD) recently launched use of the office software applications developed by the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI). ASTI customized a set of information systems solutions (Infosys) which includes the following modules: Personnel Management Information System; Inventory System; Procurement System; and Announcements and Events (Calendar) System. The Inventory and Procurement System consists of sub-modules that enable users to monitor and keep stock of equipment and supplies; monitor and update Acknowledgement Receipts of Equipment (ARE); and generate forms used for procurement. The Announcement and Events System on the other hand, enables staffs to communicate about event schedules, including in-house meetings and other activities. The integrity of data in the system is maintained through access privileges given to staffs.

Activities for this year's celebration of the National Biotechnology Week would confirm that biotechnology is not only for scientists, policymakers, and farmers. Biotech, organizers assure, has something to offer to everyone.The annual event adopted the theme "Bioteknolohiya para sa Kalikasan, Kalusugan. Kagandahan, Kabuhayan, at Kaunlaran," which was held November 22-29, 2009 at the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center in SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.
