Halal Industry as an emerging sector in our country is unsurprisingly beset with various challenges and problems impeding its growth and development. To address technical and scientific matters pertaining to Halal, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. XII (DOST XII) launched the "Philippine Science and Technology Program for the Development of the Halal Industry" during the 1st National Halal Forum held last year in General Santos City that convened international and local Halal Stakeholders from the government, private sector/ industry and academe.

Activities for this year's celebration of the National Biotechnology Week would confirm that biotechnology is not only for scientists, policymakers, and farmers. Biotech, organizers assure, has something to offer to everyone.

The annual event adopted the theme "Bioteknolohiya para sa Kalikasan, Kalusugan. Kagandahan, Kabuhayan, at Kaunlaran," which was held November 22-29, 2009 at the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center in SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. It was highlighted by biotechnology breakthroughs in the country that attracted strong interest from environmentalists, health enthusiasts, beauty buffs, entrepreneurs, decision makers, development advocates, and including activities for students and kids.

Dr. Alexander R. Madrigal, regional director of DOST CALABARZON, is this year's host of the 2nd South Luzon Cluster S&T Fair to be held from November 9 to 13, 2009 at SM City-Sta. Rosa in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.
