Department of Science and Technology Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro wears her advocacy especially during proud moments when the close-knit science community stirs up from its undeserved staid reputation. Alabastro was sunny in a silk gown topped with plaid, hand-woven silk bolero dyed with talisay leaves and young coconut husk at the recent National Science and Technology Week opening rites held at the Manila Hotel.

Harvard University's pick as "Scientist of the Year" in 2007 was a Filipino scientist who recently keynoted the National Science and Technology Week opening program at the Manila Hotel.

The Department of Science and Technology DOST, chair of the 2009 National Biotechnology Week (NBW) celebration, is inviting everyone to join the NBW Logo Design Contest. The logo should symbolize the applications and benefits of biotechnology highlighting the theme "Bioteknolohiya para sa Kalikasan, kalusugan, Kagandahan, Kabuhyayan at Kaunlaran."

The Science Council of Asia (SCA) in its recently concluded 9th Conference held at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore voted a Filipino medical doctor as its next president.

The Quezon City science community lined up activities for the 2009 National Science and Technology Week celebration that began July 21. Department of Science and Technology Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro, Quezon City Mayor Feliciano "Sonny" Belmonte, Jr., and University of the Philippines Diliman Chancellor Sergio S. Cao who also chairs QCSC, attended the celebration.
