To help the farmers in Kalayaan Laguna address their problem of oversupply of tomatoes, DOST-CALABARZON, Provincial Science and Technology Center-Laguna, in cooperation with Laguna State Polytechnic University and the Local Government Unit of Kalayaan Laguna, conducted a Techno Training on Tomato Processing.


In the first week pf October, more than 10 tons of tomatoes were thrown away in Kalayaan, Laguna due to an oversupply despite its low demand, resulting to a price drop.  The tomatoes were sold for 2.50-5.00 pesos only per kilo.

Ms. Thessalonica S. Manguiat, Mr. Reynado Magpantay Jr., and Ms. Julieta V. Alipio, trainers of CIT LSPU San Pablo, taught the Local Government Unit representatives on the different production process of different tomato-based products such as Pickled Tomatoes, Tomato Puree, Tomato Jam, and Sweetened Tomatoes.

To continuously help the farmers, they were offered to utilize the spray dryer in the CALABARZON Food Solutions Hub (C-Fosh). The spray dryer is a food processing equipment used to dry liquids and slurry and turn them into dry powder. C-Fosh is now looking into the production of powdered tomato and Tomato Coffee. Moreover, the tomato products were showcased in the Laguna Trade Fair from October 22-25, 2018.
