In support to the Pangkabuhayang De Pidal Project of the Local Government of Sto. Tomas through the Livelihood and Cooperative Office (LCO), DOST PSTC Batangas conducted an Awareness-Seminar on Basic Food Hygiene for Food Handlers to educate the project beneficiaries about Food Safety held at Conference Room, Municipal Hall, Sto. Tomas, Batangas, Nov. 7.


Pangkabuhayan De Pidal Project aims to upgrade the streetfood vending practice of streetfood vendors in the Municipality of Sto. Tomas. The project includes provision of food safety compliant food cart, seed capital and seminar on food safety.

Mr. Mhark Ellgine A. Libao, SRS I of DOST Batangas facilitated the forum. Participants were educated with guidelines that they should always adhere with while performing particular food production processes in accordance to the principles of GMP.

Discussion on GMP regulations which require that the processes by which products are made, as well as the final products, are safe took place during the seminar. Topics such as Food Safety, GMP, Food Hazards (i.e., biological, chemical, physical and allergens), Cross-contamination, Personnel Hygiene, Food Contact Surface, Pest Control, Good Hygiene Practices and Food preparation were also covered. The participants were also asked about the possible scenarios in their production where cross-contamination may occur. Proper handwashing was demonstrated well to the participants using the Glo-Germ Kit.

The seminar focused on the standards set by the Philippine Food and Drug Administration.
